Under the Greater Sydney Commission (GSC) plan for Sydney, the proposed Metropolis of Three Cities gives rise to new identities for the existing, emerging, and new Urban fabrics proposed for Sydney CBD, Parramatta, and Western Sydney.

ULI Australia and Urbis are pleased to launch our new CIty Series of lectures and discussions that will focus on each City, but lead the conversation away from just planning and infrastructure, to focus on the human and social side of urban life, while acknowledging the economic drivers and required development.

City Series: Delivering Social Equity across a Metropolis of Three Cities

Any city needs to be relevant to and respond to  people - both those existing and those planned as the future community of an emerging place. In seeking to deliver this relevance, we need to ask the question - for whom are we creating the city? Who will live here, work here, or visit? City shapers need to think more about the social objectives of a new city, and the social diversity of an existing one.

In planning for the future of Sydney, we are vexed with three complex urban fabrics, each with their own unique characteristics, opportunities, and challenges. How do we plan a better future for these cities? What can be learnt from the past to shape the future? How does the existing city core remain relevant as alternative cities emerge?
In answering these questions, ULI Sydney and Urbis are presenting a three-part City Series that will consider this topic across the planned Metropolis of Three Cities:

    · The Western Parkland City – 7 November 2019
    · The Eastern Harbour City – February 2020
    · The Central River City – May 2020

City Series: Creating the Western Parkland City - Who Are We Shaping It For ?
    Thursday, 7th November 2019

As the least established of the three cities, the Western Parkland City comes with an opportunity to shape desirable future urban outcomes. Cities that have emerged from airport-driven development have the potential to create thousands of much needed jobs, attract world-class talent, infuse new investments, infrastructure, and new vitality into a region.

However, planning a new city from scratch involves much more than infrastructure planning, economic forecasts, and urban design. Who are we delivering the Western Parkland City for, and how do we attract people to live, work and thrive there?

Our inaugural City Series event will feature the Greater Sydney Commission Chief Commissioner, Lucy Hughes Turnbull AO, who will provide a keynote that will frame the session, and provide the stimulus for a lively panel discussion that will follow.
