    As Australia heads into its next phase of urban maturity it finds itself challenged by the quest for housing and places to live, not just a little bit, but at scale. This is an emerging worldwide discussion.

     

    In Australia a large proportion of its population live within proximity to its coastal edge. Other than Canberra and a handful of inner cityscapes the Australian condition is one of association with its coast and immediate hinterland.

     

    The ULI and event partner Hatch Roberts Day bring to you an insight into landmark models that have informed urban planning and community development over decades and in particular the coastal condition.

     

    The case study of Seaside, Florida, holds a unique place in the recent evolution of town planning and coastal architecture and has had a notable impact globally in the resurgence of timeless town founding and town planning practices.

     

    Seaside is often considered the archetype of the New Urbanism movement, a design philosophy that emerged in the late 20th century as a reaction to conventional suburban development and a desire to create more walkable, mixed-use, sustainable and vibrant communities.

    Larry Davis (visiting from the US) who is the Seaside Institute Board of Governors Treasurer and has played an influential role in the shaping of the urban and architectural layout of Seaside, will provide the keynote at this forum.

    Larry will be joined at the forum by several leading Australian town founders who have been inspired by Seaside and/or were recently hosted at Seaside by Larry and Christy Milliken, the Director of the Seaside Institute.

     

    Following Larry’s presentation, Architect Roger Nelson, will moderate a panel discussion with Larry and the Australian urban development industry leaders on the challenges and possibilities ahead for Australia as it heads towards the challenges of the times.

    Larry Davis

    Seaside Institute Board of Governors Treasurer, Seaside Community Realty Inc.

    Originally licensed in 1987, Larry began his real estate career in 1990 after serving as Group Sales Director for SEASIDE®. Licensed as a Broker in 1993, he established Davis Properties of Northwest FL Inc., with the vision of “...not becoming the largest real estate company, but with the goal of being involved in the newest, most innovative and interesting projects." Following this ideal, Larry was instrumental in planning and sales of Rosemary Beach, participated in early Alys Beach charrettes and has consulted on numerous Traditional Neighborhood Developments. In June 2020, Larry joined Seaside Community Realty, Inc. as their “Broker of Record”. In addition to being active in real estate sales, Larry is a Board Member of The Seaside Institute, and consults regarding all aspects of Traditional Neighborhood Planning and New Urbanism. In 2011 Larry represented Northwest Florida in the Leadership Florida Executive Program. He currently resides in Seagrove Beach with wife, Melissa and their dog, Jack.

    Damien Tangey

    Founder, Birchgrove Property

    Damien Tangey is the founder of Birchgrove Property, a Bendigo based business which has a long history of delivering and growing residential communities in regional Victoria. Damien commenced his career as a property valuer over 30 years ago and has significant experience in the property sector. He has a strong understanding of the tiers of policy, regulation and market forces defining settlement patterns and the housing delivery and affordability framework in Victoria. Damien currently serves as the Deputy Chair of the Victorian Planning Authority Board. He also serves as the Board Chair of Haven Home Safe a key registered affordable housing association in Victoria. Damien is a life member of the Urban Development Institute of Australia (Vic) and has previously served with UDIA in a range of elected roles including as President and also as Vice President of the UDIA National Council. He also has a history of serving in a number of both government and community based board and committee roles including with Regional Development Australia Loddon Mallee, La Trobe University Planning Advisory Committee and the Bendigo Business Council.

    Carolyn Viney

    Chief Executive Officer, Super Housing Partnerships

    Carolyn is CEO of Super Housing Partnerships, which is a specialist investment manager focussed on increasing the at scale supply of affordable BTR residential housing and ensuring access by ordinary working Australians to a range of housing choices. The Super Housing Partnerships platform seeks to unlock suitable investment opportunities by establishing partnerships with superannuation funds and other institutional capital providers, well credentialled private developers as well as Community Housing Providers. Prior to joining Super Housing Partnerships, Carolyn held the role of Chief Development Officer at Vicinity Centres where she oversaw the growth of their $3 billion development pipeline and formulation of its mixed use strategy and prior to that held a number of senior roles at Grocon including CEO, Deputy CEO and Head of Development. Carolyn is Chair of the Advisory Board to the Victorian Government’s Office of Projects Victoria and a Non-Executive Director of the Walter + Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Australia’s leading medical research institute. She is a Non-Executive Director of The Big Issue and Homes for Homes, both of which are not for profit providers of employment and support to homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged people and an Advisory Board Member of Women’s Property Initiatives, a not for profit housing provider to women and children at risk of homelessness. Carolyn is a current Division Councillor and former President of the Victorian Division of the Property Council of Australia.

    Mike Day

    Co founder | Partner, Urban Solutions, HATCH | RobertsDay

    A co-founder and partner at HATCH | Roberts Day, Mike has moderated visioning + planning design forums and led the firm’s design teams responsible for an array of urban transformation projects and new towns throughout Australia, New Zealand, UAE and Asia since the inception of the company in 1993. Mike was the principal master planner and urban designer of the Ellenbrook New Town in Western Australia and in 2004, the recipient of the Russell Taylor Award for Design Excellence for Ellenbrook. Ellenbrook received the International Real Estate Federation [FIABCI] 2015 World Prix d'Excellence Award as the world's best master-planned community. Place Leaders Asia Pacific bestowed Mike with the 2018 Centrepiece Award | Leadership Excellence in Promoting Walkable Urbanism. Most recently Mike led the masterplanning for the jointly funded Consolidated Land and Rail Australia | Federal Government Strategic Business Case for the CLARA High Speed Rail and eight sustainable, liveable, connected cities between Sydney and Melbourne. Mike is a Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

    Roger Nelson

    Owner, RN Architecture

    Roger Nelson started practise in Western Australia in 1981 where he pursued a career with the architectural firm Hames Sharley concentrating on urban planning, architecture and business development. This led to a 10-year career and took him to New Zealand where he established the Auckland studio of Hames Sharley in 1987. In 1991 Roger returned to the Melbourne studio of Hames Sharley to assist with the rebuilding of that studio after the crash of 1987. Roger was new to Melbourne at that point and during that in initial period Roger saw an opportunity to start his own business and architectural practice which was initially called BN Group in 1994. Roger quickly established a reputation of a forthright master planner understanding consumer trends and particularly how cities work. The mixing of those skills enabled him to build a practise of 25 people by 1999 undertaking significant work for the major retail investment institutions at that stage including the Gandel Group, Colonial and Westfield. A seminal moment came for the practice in 1999 when Roger was able to manifest his long held urban designs aspirations into concepts of master planning and architectural design of the major city block on the Queen Victoria hospital site. The Melbourne City Council had bought this site in the year earlier and then put it to public tender in 1999. Roger’s ideas were taken up by Grocon and Colliers. This consortium put those ideas to the City and out of approximately 120 submissions was chosen as the preferred idea and bid for that site developed became the QV development. This launched a new phase of Rogers practice and upon meeting his partner Lyndon Hayward and then, Hamish Lyon, enabled the full development of QV to happen. This created a period of great contribution to the fabric of the city by the practice which became known as NH Architecture. These projects and contributions included, QV a whole city block of central Melbourne, QV1, QV2, Federation Square, Melbourne Central, Myer Melbourne, Melbourne Convention Centre, Southgate and the Southbank entertainment precinct, Margaret Court Arena and the MOPT precinct, current masterplans for Melbourne Arts centre, at Melbourne University, the Northern sector of Docklands and numerous infill projects within the CBD. Equally the studios work includes projects in the surrounding regions of the metropolitan area that have had equal influence. The overall theme of the work has its basis in the principle that successful cities are moulded through the perception of the public realm where buildings are part of the network. Also, that the public realm is a partnership between the publicly owned network and public space within the private network Roger also chaired the influential Melbourne Retail Advisory Board 2006 to 2012. The Board advised both the City of Melbourne and the Victorian State Government. The Board contributed strategic advice of the CoM work around the merging of Melbourne’s profile as a Business city, a Design city, and most importantly, a Public city. The Studio has been recognised by industry awards in Architecture and Urban Planning. This includes winning the AIAs “Melbourne prize” 4 times for contributions of architecture to the image of Melbourne. He was also made a fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects in 2021. He also continues his interest in the Urban Land Institute and contributes through his participation as a judge in the Asia Pacific awards program. Roger was Managing director for 6 years of NH Architecture. At the end of 2021 Roger retired form NH as a director and shareholder and is now working on allied projects and consulting. He maintains an exceptional sharp interest in urban planning and the challenges that the property and design professions face in the post pandemic world.
